Palace: Prince William's wife, Kate, in labor

LONDON (AP) ? The heir is almost apparent.

Britain and the world waited for news Monday afternoon, after Prince William's wife, Kate, checked into the private wing of a central London hospital and palace officials announced that she was in labor.

William was at his wife's side for the birth of their first child. It is a historic moment for the British monarchy ? the baby will be third in line for the British throne, after Prince Charles and William, and should eventually become king or queen.

William and Kate entered St. Mary's Hospital in central London through a side door early Monday morning, avoiding the world's media. Kensington Palace confirmed her arrival about 90 minutes later.

Royal officials said they traveled by car, without a police escort, just before 6 a.m. Kate ? also known as the Duchess of Cambridge ? is expected to give birth in the private Lindo Wing of the hospital, where Princess Diana also gave birth to William and his younger brother, Prince Harry.

"Things are progressing as normal," the couple's spokesman said.

Palace officials are not expected to provide many details about how her labor is progressing.

The baby is in line to become Britain's monarch and be recognized as head of state in 15 other countries, including Canada and Australia, playing a leading role in charting the future of the Commonwealth.

But little else is known, including how the baby will arrive ? it is not clear if Kate will have a natural birth or deliver by a cesarean section ? its gender and its name.

Prince Charles, about to become a grandfather, told well-wishers early Monday afternoon that he had not received any updates about Kate's condition.

Queen Elizabeth II, the expectant great-grandmother, arrived at Buckingham Palace Monday afternoon, drawing cheers from the crowd gathered to await the birth announcement.

Royal watchers must wait to be told of the baby's arrival from the palace, which is planning to reveal the news through a mixture of tradition and social media.

Palace officials have said that the first hint will come when a royal aide emerges from the hospital with a signed bulletin carrying the Buckingham Palace letterhead. The bulletin will be given to an official who will be driven to Buckingham Palace, where it will be posted on an easel in public view in front of the building.

At the same time the bulletin is posted, there will be an official announcement on Twitter and the media will be formally notified. The document will give the baby's gender, weight and time of birth.

It could be some time before the baby's name is made public. When William was born, a week passed before his name was announced. Charles's name remained a mystery for an entire month.

But it is the baby's gender that is of particular interest because the prospect of Kate's pregnancy prompted a change to laws of succession to ensure a daughter would not be passed over for the crown by a younger brother. Boy or girl, the child will be the prospective future monarch.

The birth of a new heir to the throne has been breathlessly anticipated by many Britons since William and Kate wed on April 29, 2011.

Reflecting the fact that not everyone is so excited, however, the Guardian added a "republican" button to its website so that those who are not in favor of the monarchy could get a baby-free version of the paper.

Despite a rough start to the pregnancy, when she was hospitalized for acute morning sickness, the 31-year-old Kate made a number of public appearances that were halted only near the end of her term.

She will be looked after by a top-notch medical team led by royal gynecologist Dr. Marcus Setchell.

Since the duchess has cut back on her royal duties, media outlets have been clamoring for position outside of the hospital in anticipation of the birth, jockeying to secure the best vantage point for filming William and Kate emerging, babe in arms.

At Buckingham Palace, where the birth will be announced, tourists packed near the front gate, peering through the black iron bars to catch of a glimpse of any action.

Two New York teachers, Maddalena Buffalino, 29, and Michael Savino, 32, were quizzing a pair of passing police officers about where the easel would be placed.

"Just being here is very cool," said Buffalino, who said she'd been following royal baby news intently.

She said the tradition and glamor of the royal household was what attracted Americans like her to the palace.

"It's the history," the social studies teacher said. "We don't have it."

Police eventually shooed the growing crush of tourists away from the gate, with one officer warning the assembled crowd to keep an eye on their wallets and valuables.

Officials have said that William plans to take two weeks' paternity leave and then return to his military duties as a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot in Wales.

His tour of duty is scheduled to wrap up around September, and he and Kate are expected to move from their isolated cottage on the island of Anglesey off the coast of Wales to Kensington Palace in central London.

But major refurbishment works at the palace likely won't be finished until at least a month or two after the infant is born ? meaning that William and Kate will most likely have to make do with their current temporary home in London, a two-bedroom property at the palace.

Come autumn, however, the family will be able to move into their permanent London home, Apartment 1a at Kensington Palace ? a four-story house with a nursery, 20 rooms and a private garden.

An Unusually Close Look At The Development Of Facebook Home

Facebook Home had its Android-only release in April and it's been sort of proliferating a little bit maybe? ever since. It lives in a weird space between operating systems and apps, but it's meant to be something you don't over-think. So don't think about. Just let it be a mostly successful immersive experience. That's it. Oh plus this 50 minute video. But mainly it speaks for itself.

Apple's iOS maintains dominance over Android with 63% mobile browsing share

New mobile Web browsing data shows that iOS users remain far more active on the Internet than their Android counterparts, with Apple's devices accounting for nearly two-thirds of all domestic mobile website traffic.

With data pulled from 70 of the most popular mobile websites in the U.S., Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray found that traffic from iOS devices increased by 2.6 percentage points to capture 63 percent of domestic mobile traffic share. Android also saw a slight increase of 0.2 percentage points over the past four weeks, putting the platform at 28 percent ? less than half of Apple's share.

Other competing platforms, such as Microsoft's Windows Phone or BlackBerry 10, could only muster a collective 8 percent share as of July 19. That was down 2.6 percentage points over the last month.

In a research note to investors on Monday, Munster highlighted the fact that Apple's iOS platform was responsible for 80 percent of smartphone sales at AT&T in the first quarter of the year, while more than half of all smartphones activated at Verizon in the June quarter were iPhones. However, he said Apple's dominance among Web browsing it's not just attributable to the fact that the iPhone is the most popular smartphone in the U.S. ? iOS users are also clearly. more engaged with their devices than those who use Android.

Finally, Munster said that the iOS platform also sees a strong boost from tablets, where Apple's iPad lineup is again the market leader. Looking forward, he believes future products like a next-generation iPhone and a more affordable "iPhone Lite" will help maintain Apple's lead in mobile browser market share.

On a global scale, Android continues to outpace iOS in terms of market share, shipping on 59.5 percent of all worldwide "smart mobile devices" ??tablets, smartphones and laptops ? in the first quarter of calendar 2013. For that same period, Apple took a 19.3 percent share, according to Canalys.

Munster views Apple as "the leader in the mobile device and digital content distribution markets," and remains bullish on the company's stock. Piper Jaffray has maintained its $655 price target for AAPL shares, and continues to rate the company as "overweight."

Emergency personnel respond to Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, Texas, after a woman died on the Texas Giant roller coaster, pictured in the background.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Investigators will try to determine if a woman who died while riding a roller coaster at a Six Flags amusement park in North Texas fell from the ride after some witnesses said she wasn't properly secured.

The accident happened just after 6:30 p.m. Friday at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington. Park spokeswoman Sharon Parker confirmed that a woman died while riding the Texas Giant roller coaster ? dubbed the tallest steel-hybrid coaster in the world ? but did not specify how she was killed.

Witnesses told local media outlets the woman fell. The woman's name has not been released.

"She goes up like this. Then when it drops to come down, that's when it (the safety bar) released and she just tumbled," Carmen Brown of Arlington told The Dallas Morning News. Brown said she was waiting in line to get on the ride when the accident happened. She witnessed the woman being strapped into the ride.

"They didn't secure her right. One of the employees from the park ? one of the ladies ? she asked her to click her more than once, and they were like, 'As long you heard it click, you're OK.' Everybody else is like, 'Click, click, click.' " Brown told the newspaper.

"Hers only clicked once. Hers was the only one that went down once, and she didn't feel safe, but they let her still get on the ride," Brown said.

Six Flags expressed sadness over the death and said the ride would be closed Saturday.

"We are working closely with authorities to determine the cause of the accident," Parker said in a statement Saturday. She also said a concert scheduled for Saturday had been canceled.

Arlington police Sgt. Christopher Cook, the department spokesman, referred all questions to Parker. A message left for Parker by The Associated Press was not returned. No other details were available.

The Texas Giant is 14 stories high, and has a drop of 79 degrees and a bank of 95 degrees. It can carry up to 24 riders. It first opened in 1990 as an all-wooden coaster but underwent a $10 million renovation to install steel-hybrid rails and reopened in 2011.

When the car that the woman had been riding in returned to the loading zone, two people got out and were visibly upset, Rockwell resident John Putman told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

"They were screaming, 'My mom! My mom! Let us out, we need to go get her!" Putman told the newspaper.

Also Friday, an Ohio amusement park's thrill ride malfunctioned when a boat accidentally rolled backward down a hill and flipped over in water, injuring all seven people on it. Operators stopped the Shoot the Rapids water ride after the accident, said officials with Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio.

Six Flags Over Texas opened in 1961 and was the first amusement park in the Six Flags system. It is 17 miles west of downtown Dallas. The park's first fatality happened in 1999. A 28-year-old Arkansas woman drowned and 10 other passengers were injured when a raft-like boat on the Roaring Rapids ride overturned in 2 to 3 feet of water.

Mixed energy results for Australia's Santos

ADELAIDE, Australia, July 19 (UPI) -- Australian energy company Santos said Friday its second quarter natural gas production was 6 percent lower than the same time last year.

Santos released second quarter production figures Friday, saying production was at 8.9 million barrels of oil equivalent, or 6 percent lower year-on-year. It posted an increase in production from some of its assets in Australia but those gains were offset by lower production in Indonesia.

Its primary gas outlook was buoyed by discoveries off the western coast of Australia.

Santos announced Thursday it made a natural gas discovery at its Winchester-1 exploration well in the Carnarvon basin off Western Australia. The company said the well revealed significant amounts of natural gas.

Santos said its crude oil production for the second quarter was 27 percent higher than the previous quarter because of new start-ups in Australia.

Sales revenue for the company was up 8 percent from first quarter 2013 to $797 million, which Santos attributed to higher prices.
