Bill O'Brien, 'the right guy,' takes Penn St reins (AP)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? Bill O'Brien took the podium, looked straight ahead and uttered the kind of words you would expect from someone who had just been introduced as Penn State's new head football coach.

"This is unbelievable."

The offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots the past four years, O'Brien picked quite a challenge for his first head-coaching job. Until Nov. 9, the Nittany Lions had been directed by the same person for 46 seasons ? Joe Paterno. The Hall of Fame coach, however, was fired in the aftermath of child sex abuse scandal involving retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

Not only is O'Brien replacing Division I's winningest coach, he is joining a school trying to steer its way through federal, NCAA and Big Ten inquiries ? not to mention criminal proceedings against former administrators.

O'Brien will remain with the Patriots for the duration of their playoff run. New England has a bye this weekend.

"I feel like I'm a mentally tough guy right now," the 42-year-old O'Brien said. "I feel like I'm the right guy."

The new coach said he would pull together his staff during the next two or three days, and get the assistants on the recruiting trail immediately while he works with New England. He will retain assistant Larry Johnson from Paterno's staff to coach the defensive line.

"I'm going to surround myself with good people," O'Brien said, "and I'm excited to do that."

His five-year contract, finalized Friday, included base compensation starting at $950,000, with a 5 percent increase each season. O'Brien will also collect another $1 million a year for radio and television work, as well as a $350,000 Nike contract.

The base package is roughly on par with Paterno's compensation, which was about $1.02 million last year ? a relative bargain for a coach with two national championships. Until now, Penn State never released details of salary from endorsement deals outside the school.

O'Brien joined New England in 2007 following 14 seasons on the college level, including stops at Duke, Maryland and Georgia Tech.

The Patriots are third in the NFL overall in scoring (32.1 points per game), and second in total offense (428 yards) and passing (317.8 yards).

Penn State finished a 9-4 campaign with a 30-14 loss in the TicketCity Bowl to Houston on Jan. 2. The Nittany Lions relied on defense much of the year after the offense struggled with a two-quarterback system.

PSU President Rodney Erickson said O'Brien as someone who would "maintain the school's commitment to excellence on the field and in the classroom. We have that leader in Coach O'Brien."

Though O'Brien has no previous ties to Penn State, he and Paterno do have one thing in common ? both are graduates of Brown University.

O'Brien rocked on his heels and fidgeted with a water bottle while taking questions from reporters. Stepping to the podium, he surveyed the crowd and found his young son, Michael, wearing the blue No. 25 jersey of tailback Silas Redd.

"I can't wait to get going on this," he said, "get everyone headed in the right direction."

This was O'Brien's first year coordinating the Patriots' powerful offense, but he has also coached star quarterback Tom Brady since 2009 and spent 2008 coaching receivers.

O'Brien recently was in the spotlight when he and Brady got into a heated argument, shown on national television, after Brady threw an interception in the end zone in the fourth quarter of the Patriots' 34-27 win over the Washington Redskins on Dec. 11.

Asked about the incident and his relationship with Brady, he spoke of the Pro Bowl quarterback in glowing terms, adding: "Football is an emotional game."

Brady has described O'Brien as a great coach and friend; Pats receiver Julian Edelman said he is charismatic and emotional.

Not everyone, though, has immediately hopped aboard the O'Brien bandwagon.

Some alumni and former players were concerned that O'Brien had no previous head coaching experience nor Penn State ties. Others were critical of the search itself, angered that ex-players weren't consulted about the selection process. Former teammates and standout linebackers Brandon Short and LaVar Arrington started a petition supporting the candidacy of interim coach Tom Bradley.

O'Brien addressed the rumblings in a letter he said he sent to former players.

"We respect the rights to one's opinions, beliefs and (their) contributions to Penn State," he said, reading it at the briefing. "We respectfully request the opportunity to earn your trust through communication. In time, we will find we have more common interests and goals than not."

Bradley wished O'Brien well. The longtime assistant under Paterno remained on the staff as of Saturday, though his future was uncertain.

"No matter the challenges that the university may face, Penn State will always have my support," Bradley said in a statement. "This is forever my home and forever my family. It is important that we come together to support our players and our university."

New England coach Bill Belichick, whom O'Brien thanked during the news conference, said in a statement that O'Brien "has met every personal and professional challenge head on with great passion and competitiveness."

"I expect Bill to draw on his deep background in college football and the NFL to continue attracting and developing top players," Belichick said. "For five years, Bill's outstanding work with our quarterbacks and entire offense has led to record-setting performances. His presence and command before our team has grown into that of an inspirational leader.

"This is a great match between a storied program and an old-school football coach. Bill will be up to the task and I couldn't be happier for him."

Apple iPad surges to 3 billion app downloads

iPad App Store

As of yesterday, the iPad has been on the market for 21 months and in that relatively short amount of time, iPad users managed to pass three billion app downloads, according to ABI Research. Apple iPhone users took two years to accomplish such a feat, yet the iPad already accounts for 19 percent of all app downloads on Apple devices. The demand for apps is stronger than ever.

Meanwhile, this high demand for apps is much less apparent on Android tablets. So far, Android tablet owners have downloaded only 440 million apps and Honeycomb-powered devices have been available for almost a year now. Poor hardware sales have led developers to stray away from making tablet apps for Android. It?s kind of a chicken and egg thing: the lack of Honeycomb users mean developers didn?t want to create apps but the lack of apps meant consumers didn?t want to buy these.

Lim Shiyang, a researcher at ABI Research, blames Android fragmentation for its slow app download rate:

?Discounting all those apps that were originally developed for Android smartphones, Android still trails greatly behind the iPad in terms of its tablet app offerings.?Many Android tablets in the market are still using older versions of Android, which disadvantages users from enjoying the better effects of apps produced from more advanced software development kits.?

Moving forward, two major product launches will push the numbers for app downloads even higher: Android Ice Cream Sandwich and the iPad 3. Ice Cream Sandwich is already getting warm reception after its debut on the Galaxy Nexus and it will soon start making its way onto mainstream tablets. For Google and manufacturers? sake, let?s hope it gives tablet sales a boost.

As for the iPad 3, I?m going out on a limb to make a prediction that the third-generation iPad will be the one to truly make ?tablet? a household name. Consumers are going to snatch these up with little regard to the significance of its upgrades from the iPad 2.

The two opposing forces will work together in 2012 to let app downloads skyrocket.

GovDelivery buy expands communications offerings

GovDelivery has acquired GovInteractive for an undisclosed amount in a move that adds to the company?s Web-based emergency communications capabilities.

GovI will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of GovDelivery. GovI founder and president John Carrino will continue lead the business.

?GovI brings a talented team, patented citizen alert system technology and a proven track record of delivering value to public sector organizations,? said Scott Burns, CEO and co-founder of GovDelivery in a statement.

Joining GovDelivery will let GovI provide more services and resources to its customers, Carrino said.

The acquisition of GovI provides GovDelivery access to key voice, multi-channel alerting functionality that will be part of GovDelivery?s digital communication management solution, company officials said.

GovDelivery customers include the Federal Emergency Management Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The company?s focus is to provide government agencies with better ways to communicate.

In 2009, Gov Deliver acquired GovLoop, a social networking and collaboration site for government employees.

Colts fire Polians as cleansing begins (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Cleaning out the Colts front office may be only the start of the changes in Indianapolis.

Team owner Jim Irsay fired team vice chairman Bill Polian and his son, Chris, the Colts' general manager on Monday. He said there was a good chance coach Jim Caldwell will be back next season, but his evaluation was not over.

He also must still decide whether a healthy Peyton Manning and a new quarterback can co-exist in the same locker room, and which veteran free agents come back next year, if any.

"I don't think there's ever been a year in the NFL where a team went 2-14 and there's not been changes," defensive captain Gary Brackett said Monday, less than 24 hours after a season-ending loss at Jacksonville.

Outsiders had expected the first order of business to be the firing of Caldwell, who won 14 straight games and advanced to the Super Bowl in his first season as Colts coach. Caldwell said he simply went about his business Monday, speaking with Irsay following the 19-13 loss at Jacksonville and with both Polians on Monday, part of his usual routine.

"You lose as many games as we lost in a year, there's a problem, there's an issue," Caldwell said. "But when we were 14-2, the way you guys put it, my job was in limbo then, right?"

The elder Polian had constructed Super Bowl teams in Buffalo and Indy, and an NFC title contender at Carolina.

But troubling signs emerged this season as the Colts lost time and time again -- 13 straight at one point -- with Manning sidelined to recover from Sept. 8 neck surgery. And it was Manning who suggested he and Bill Polian were not on the same page.

Polian said on one of his weekly radio shows that he and the four-time league MVP had discussed the possibility of establishing a transition plan at quarterback and that Manning was OK with it. Manning later said the two had never discussed the 2012 draft plans, which include the No. 1 pick amid speculation that the Colts will take Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck to groom as Manning's successor.

Then, just before Christmas, Polian told local reporters that Manning would fail his exit physical, a move that would actually help the Colts because it would allow him to continue working out at the team complex during the offseason.

"That was kind of news to me," Manning told reporters Sunday, then said he probably could pass the physical.

Fans have been clamoring for the ouster of Caldwell and both Polians. Irsay, a frequent poster on Twitter, has been listening.

"I want 2 thank all ColtsFans..here,throughout the country n abroad,4ur tremendous, loyal support all year long. Ur feedback is heard n noted," he tweeted Monday morning.

For their part, players offered support for Caldwell, who just wrapped his third year as head coach in Indy.

"One thing about Jim is that he's a stand-up guy, and guys respect that," cornerback Jerraud Powers said. "He's a great coach, a good guy, and it was unfortunate situation this year. But he never lost the locker room."

The longer and, perhaps, more critical debate is how to rebuild this team and what to do at quarterback.

Manning never played after undergoing his third neck surgery in 19 months, a fusion of two vertebrae.

He did, however, start throwing to teammates in mid-December and received good reviews from both Bill Polian, who was watching, and running back Joseph Addai, who was catching balls. Doctors familiar with the procedure who did not treat Manning say he should return to a high level of play now that the fusion has healed.

If he is healthy, Irsay has promised to bring back Manning regardless of the $28 million bonus he is owed in March.

But after posting the NFL's worst record without Manning, the Colts also have won the Luck sweepstakes, potentially putting two franchise quarterbacks on the same roster.

"I think I can co-exist with any player I've ever played with," Manning said Sunday. "I think I've always been a good teammate in that way."

If Manning returns, Irsay might be more likely to bring back former Pro Bowlers Robert Mathis, Jeff Saturday and Reggie Wayne, all of whom are now in their 30s, and keep other key high-priced cogs in the Colts' success such as Brackett and safety Melvin Bullitt.

"I think when you're playing, you're so entrenched with the people you go to work with every day," Saturday said. "It's different for us to go out and think like an owner. But whatever decisions, we've got to take it as a community and move on."

He'd clearly had enough of the Polians, though.

Bill Polian drew the wrath of fans in 2009 when he pulled the starters in the third quarter against the New York Jets, costing the Colts a chance at a perfect season after going 14-0. At the time, Polian told listeners that the team's goal was to win the Super Bowl, not go undefeated. Indy wound up losing the Super Bowl, too.

When Manning went down this season, Polian came under fire for not having a capable backup in place, signing Kerry Collins out of retirement and fueling speculation that the team was interested in Brett Favre. He told radio listeners that he accepted the blame.
