NFL reminds teams of anti-discrimination policy

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NFL distributed a document to its teams Monday reiterating its anti-discrimination policy on sexual orientation.

A memo sent Monday by Commissioner Roger Goodell to ownership, front-office personnel and coaches says: "Please ensure that this document is made available to all players and staff."

It includes a section on questions teams cannot ask prospective draft picks and free agents. After the NFL combine in February, three players said officials posed questions relating to their sexual orientation.

Examples given of prohibited queries include: "Do you like women or men? How well do you do with the ladies? Do you have a girlfriend?"

The document also says "any jokes, comments or pranks" about an employee's sexual orientation constitute harassment. Examples are "giving someone a sexual gag gift" or hiring a stripper for an employee's birthday party. "Offensive or degrading words or phrases" and posters or screen savers of a sexual nature are also harassment.

The timing of the memo proved appropriate. Later Monday, veteran NBA center Jason Collins became the first active male professional athlete in the four major North American sports leagues to come out as gay.

Online poker is back: Legal website launches in NV

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Poker devotees will soon be able to skip the smoky casino and legally gamble their dollars away on the couch ? at least in the state of Nevada.

A Las Vegas-based social gambling company is expected to launch the first legal, real-money poker website in the United States on Tuesday morning.

The site, run by Ultimate Gaming, will accept wagers only from players in Nevada for now, but likely represents the shape of things to come for gamblers across the country.

Internet poker, never fully legal, has been strictly outlawed since 2011, when the Department of Justice seized the domain names of the largest offshore sites catering to U.S. customers and blacked them out.

This crackdown, dubbed "black Friday," left poker fanatics with two options: They could either get dressed and visit a visit a card room, or break the law and log into an offshore site.

More recently, the federal government softened its stance on Internet betting, and three states ? New Jersey, Delaware and Nevada? have legalized some form of online wagering within their borders.

With Tuesday's launch, Nevada wins the race to bring Texas Hold 'em back to the Internet.

"There was black Friday, and now we're going to have 'trusting Tuesday,'" said Ultimate Gaming CEO Tobin Prior. "Players won't have to worry if their money is safe. They are going to be able to play with people they can trust and know the highest regulatory standards have been applied."

The site, UltimatePoker.com, will look familiar to those who participated in the poker craze of the 2000s. Only the account setup and login process have changed. Instead of checking a box certifying they are older than 18, players will have to endure a lengthy account setup process involving a Social Security number and a Nevada address. Only those older than 21 will be allowed to play.

Ultimate Gaming and the two dozen other companies still fine-tuning their Nevada poker sites hope they will win the trust not only of players, but of regulators and politicians.

"It's an opportunity to show the world how to properly run online poker," Ultimate Gaming chairman Tom Breitling said.

Several cash-hungry states are weighing legislation that would allow them to tap into what is expected to be a multibillion-dollar market. Some bills would legalize only poker, as Nevada has, while others would throw open the gates to all casino games, including slots, as New Jersey and Delaware have done.

Earlier this year, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval approved legislation that gives him the ability to sign deals with other governors to facilitate interstate Internet gambling.

Online gamblers around the world currently wager an estimated $35 billion each year, according to the American Gaming Association. A fully realized U.S. online poker market could generate $4.3 billion in revenue its first year, and $9.6 billion by year five, according to London-based research firm H2 Gambling Capital.

Still, with federal efforts to legalize Internet poker stalled, it may be a while before a critical mass of states link together to lure professional players back from overseas and drive up jackpots.

Nevada, a state of just 2.8 million, attracts 47 million visitors a year? more than the population of California. But who wants to go on vacation just to fire up their laptop and play some virtual cards?

"I think the real excitement will be when we get a very populous state like a California or a New York allowing these companies to expand," ITG casino analyst Matthew Jacob said. "But these changes often take longer to occur than people assume. It requires a change in law and then it takes a while from when the law passes until the sites are up and running."

Prior says he intends to make Ultimate Poker profitable within a matter of years, in part through cross-promotion with mixed martial arts giant Ultimate Fighting Championship. The companies share a common owner: Frank Fertitta III and his brother Lorenzo, who also own Station Casinos Inc., an extensive chain that caters to locals in Las Vegas.

The Ultimate Poker logo has enjoyed prime placement in the UFC fight octagon for months. The Ultimate Poker Facebook page, which steers fans to a zero-stakes version of the site, features a mix of UFC glamour shots and stock images of guys in hoodies staring into laptop screens.

"When you look at the demographic of the UFC fan and the online poker player, it's almost a perfect overlap," Breitling said.

In the coming months, Ultimate Gaming will have to prove that its technology and 111 employees can prevent minors and out-of-state players from wagering real dollars, and guard against money laundering.

It will also have to pay 6.75 percent of its revenue in Nevada state taxes.

It's unclear how much of a boon the new market will be to the cash-strapped state. In 2012, the Pew Center on the States analyzed 13 states that had recently legalized new types of gambling, and found that more than two-thirds of "failed to live up to the initial promises or projections."

The gambling industry is hoping the return of Internet poker will revitalize interest in the game and help brick and mortar casinos capture a younger market.

The rise of Internet poker is generally credited with helping spark the poker fad of the last decade. The end of online gambling is thought to have helped quash interest in the game.

In the coming months, the industry will be watching closely to see if poker players come flocking back from their new hobbies, replacement computer games and illegal offshore gambling sites.

"This is a really huge moment for our company, the state of Nevada and the gaming community," Breitling said. "We're hoping to make poker fun again."

Searching for the animal within

In an attempt to ease the brain recently, I did a few online tests, trying to find out what real-life animal fits my personality.

One test said I was a mole, another a racoon. Then there was the one that said I was a lion. Another said I was a hermit crab and the fifth said I was a rabbit. There was one that said I was a snake, but apparently I had just taken a previous test again. Note the completely different result the second time. So anyway, it means yours could truly be either small furry creatures (not sure if I see the similarities there), the king of the jungle (obviously that one's wrong), a crustacean (I can be crabby) or Bugs Bunny's cousin (I like carrots but not that much). My search continues.

But while some of us are looking for some kind of connection to the animal kingdom, others occasionally resort to man's more primal tendencies. Take Liverpool forward Luis Suarez for instance, who, for the second time in his career (that we know of), has been reprimanded for biting an opponent. The first was in 2010. If there is ever a zombie apocalypse and mindless beings start feeding on all forms of live meat, he would be first in line. Perhaps he's suffering from a protein deficiency, like a mild form of vampirism, and just needs an injection of human DNA every few years. So circa 2016, he'll be munching on somebody else.

Now one person who has come to the Uruguayan's defence is Mike Tyson, who infamously bit off a part of Evander Holyfield's ear during a boxing match. In true Tyson fashion, he said 'stuff' happens and everybody will get over it. And he's right. But while I can understand trying to get the better of an opponent, going all Wolfman on him is a bit extreme.

Feral footballers

At the risk of making a meal of the situation, I hope the authorities make an example of him to all the other feral footballers. On the other hand (or jaw in this case), I think I know what went through his mind as he sunk his incisors into Chelsea player Branislav Ivanovic's arm. If I'm fighting all game long against an opponent who is constantly a thorn in my side, I might lash out too. I probably wouldn't resort to toothy tactics, but I would try something.

I will say this about Suarez though - his taste seems to be diverse. Ivanovic is Serbian, while the first guy he bit, Otman Bakkal, is a Dutchman of Moroccan origin. He just needs to bite a Latino, an Asian and a Scandinavian and he should be satisfied. Belly full!

Focused between 1972 and 1975, the most violent and polarised years of the Northern Ireland conflict, this book challenges a number of persistent myths, including those concerning the role of the Irish government in the Northern Ireland conflict. It contests the notion that the years 1972 to 1975 represent a 'lost peace process', but demonstrates that the policies established during this period provided the template for Northern Ireland's current, ongoing peace settlement. Using archival sources, this book analyses the political events and processes that informed the British government's Northern Ireland policy at the time, the complex interactions between Northern Ireland political parties, and the importance of the British-Irish diplomatic relationship to the search for a solution to the Northern Ireland conflict.

Photo artist draws on tragic current events and kids for inspiration

OTTAWA - For Picasso's masterpiece Guernica, it was the German bombing of a Spanish town. For Ottawa art photographer Jonathan Hobin's Twins, it was 9/11.

Current events have always inspired art and Hobin's latest instalment in his controversial series "In the Playroom" is an arresting modern example.

Each of his photos depicts children at play re-enacting tragic public events.

Hobin, 33, has portrayed familiar stories, such as a Halloween-inspired Abu Ghraib prison scene, a portrait of the late North Korean dictator Kim Jong il, and JonBen?t Ramsay dressed in a pageant gown, among others.

He says the child models in his photographs are unpaid volunteers, and are either the children of friends and family, or models from agencies.

"I definitely would never have photographed a child unless I fully communicated what I was going to do," he said in an interview.

Parents "had to believe in what I was doing if I was going to photograph their child."

The idea for the series came after Hobin witnessed the repeated and unforgettable images of the planes striking the World Trade Center towers on 9/11.

"I started to think: 'I'm an adult and I can kind of handle what that means,'" he said.

"But with someone who is not as equipped as I am with problem-solving or just life experiences, how are they going to see that sort of thing? How are they going to comprehend what that means?"

By portraying children acting out headline-grabbing news events, Hobin explores how young minds deal with the unsettling side of the modern media-scape.

"It goes back to this whole notion that children always have incorporated things they see in popular culture into their play," he said.

"In fact, science shows that children need to physically re-enact things in order to process them. There's a tactile nature to their minds."

In one of Hobin's newest photographs, GOT HIM!, a marine with a toy gun shoots Osama Bin Laden in a messy ketchup-blood scene beside a kitchen fridge.

Hobin says his work has been polarizing. In between critical praise and gifts from fans, he's received death threats and accusations of pedophilia.

"It was quite a surprise, but I'd rather have people be excited and energetic about what I'm doing than really blas? about the whole thing."

Asked whether he would depict the recent Boston Marathon bombings, Hobin said such events need time to play out in the culture before he can consider reflecting the stories visually.

"It took probably about six or seven years before I did the 9/11 attacks. You kind of let the dust settle and see how it plays out," he said.

He says that while kids use play as a tool to process, it also reflects their emotional resilience versus the fragility of adulthood.

"They might be better equipped to survive the emotional side of what's happening at this age than we are as adults."

Starting Thursday, 17 of Hobin's images from "In the Playroom" will be released as a feature exhibition in Toronto's Contact photography festival at the Gladstone Hotel, in partnership with the Patrick Mikhail Gallery.

Philly fire department loses third man in less than a year

On Saturday a veteran fire captain with the Philadelphia Fire Department died when a burning three-story building collapsed with him inside. It has been an emotional year for the Fire Department; they lost two other men less than a year ago.

By Associated Press / April 7, 2013

Fellow firefighters salute the body of fallen comrade Capt. Michael Goodwin at a funeral home in Philadelphia, early Sunday. A fire caused a partial roof collapse that killed Goodwin and injured a colleague who was trying to rescue him, officials said.

At an emotional news conference late Saturday after the fire in the city's Fabric Row section was extinguished, Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers told reporters that the victim, 53-year-old Capt. Michael Goodwin, was his friend and "a ladder man. A firefighter's firefighter."

"He's the kind of guy who looked out for his folks ? a big guy," Ayers said. Goodwin had been with the department for 29 years.

A colleague of the fallen firefighter, 28-year-old Andrew Godlinski, was burned on his hands while trying to rescue his comrade and is recovering, officials said.

The loss came as the Fire Department prepared to mark a year since an April 9 blaze at a warehouse that killed Capt. Robert Neary, 59, and Daniel Sweeney, 25. They also died in a collapse, which came as they inspected an adjacent building.

"We have a department that is wounded," Ayers said. "We have scars that are fresh, and indeed they have now been reopened."

Saturday's fire appeared to have started in a fabric store downstairs before spreading to upstairs apartments and a neighboring boutique, the store's owner said. The proprietors of both stores told The?Philadelphia?Inquirer that everyone in both buildings at the time of the fire managed to escape.

The fire's cause wasn't immediately known, but Bruce Blumenthal, the owner of Jack B. Fabrics, said he believes it started in a wall and may have been electrical in nature.

Blumenthal said he smelled smoke coming from the basement around 5 p.m. and found a box of collars and cuffs on fire. He tried to put the flames out with an extinguisher, to no avail.

Goodwin was on the roof of the building when it collapsed, trapping him inside. Godlinski tried to rescue him before a second-floor roof and two walls also collapsed, officials said.

Goodwin is survived by a wife and two grown children, Ayers said.

The fire cut power to more than 300 customers. The Red Cross is assisting at least 17 people.

Ashampoo WinOptimizer 10

A brand spankin' new PC runs like a champ when you first boot it up, but performance issues inevitably set in. If your desktop or laptop isn't opening windows, launching applications, or booting up as quickly as it once did, it may be time to check out a tune-up utility like Ashampoo WinOptimizer 10. This utility suite lets users fix common PC problems, remove redundant files to free hard drive space, repair the registry, and more. Although WinOptimizer 10's system improvements didn't match Iolo System Mechanic 11's?(PCMag.com's current Editors' Choice pick among paid tune-up apps) or SlimWare Utilities SlimCleaner's?(PCMag.com's current Editors' Choice pick among free tuneup apps), it's an app with merit.

System Requirements and Interface
Like other tune-up utilities, WinOptimizer 10 has meager system requirements. It demands just 90MB of hard drive space, and is compatible with the Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP operating systems. Ashampoo's site doesn't list RAM requirements, but your system shouldn't suffer any problems if it can run Windows properly.

After downloading, installing, and launching WinOptimizer 10, you're presented with a clean streamlined gray-and-white interface that's divided into five areas: Overview (the main screen) Modules (houses the different tune-up tools), Favorites (your most frequently used modules), Backups (backup and restoration), and Statistics (displays the number of times you ran the software, scanned databases, and more). It has a sensible layout and is extremely easy to navigate.

The Clean-Up Process and Performance Enhancement
Ashampoo wisely includes a one-click clean-up button for those that don't want to cycle between the different utilities. However, WinOptimizer10 users have the option to use any individual tools as they see fit (for example, "Registry Optimizer," "Startup Tuner," and "File Wiper,"). WinOptimizer 10, like other tune-up utilities, includes a backup manager and task scheduler so that you can restore your PC to an earlier state should something go wrong in the cleanup process and set the app to automatically run at specific times.

I tested WinOptimizer 10's ability to clean up a PC by performing two tests?running the Geekbench system performance tool, and measuring boot times?before and after running Ashampoo's app. Each test was run three times and the results averaged.

Before WinOptimizer 10 scrubbed the system, the 2-GHz Intel Core i7 X990 Style-Note notebook with 4GB of RAM, and 80GB Intel SSD booted achieved a 5,914 Geekbench score, and booted in 50.2 seconds. After using Ashampoo WinOptimizer 10, the GeekBench score improved to 6,233. The performance enhancement trails Iolo System Mechanic 11's 6,452. The notebook boot time decreased to a relatively speedy 31.6 seconds, which is on a par with Tuneup Utilities 2013's 31.3 seconds.

In addition to running formal tests, I also spent time using the cleaned up system to see what the experience is like. The overall post-WinOptimizer 10 system performance felt snappier when opening iTunes and Steam in the cleaned-up environment.

Despite WinOptimizer's benefits it does have a glaring flare: The $39.99 price grants users just one license, which is a severe limitation in the age of the multi-PC home. WinOptimizer has a handful of competitors?Iolo System Mechanic 11, Comodo System Utilities, SlimWare SlimCleaner?that let you install the software on any number of personal computers. Outfitting just two PCs with WinOptimizer will set you back $80.

Attractive Features
WinOptimizer's other features may prove enticing?I found them quite useful during the test process. The Icon Save creates save points which contain the positions of all desktop icons so that they can be recovered should your PC flake out. Link Checker scans you PC and makes certain that icon shortcuts point toward a valid target.

File Wiper shreds files so that they cannot be recovered. Undeleter scans our PC for deleted files and highlights which ones are recoverable. This could prove extremely useful to those who accidentally or intentionally trash an important file.

A Decent PC Cleaning Tool
Ashampoo WinOptimizer 10 rejuvenates sluggish PCs, but with less vigor than the Editors' Choice award-winning Iolo System Mechanic 11 and SlimWare Utilities SlimCleaner. Still, it packs numerous useful features and helped a junked-up PC posted very respectable performance numbers. WinOptimizer 10 is an application worth checking out if the license limitations aren't a huge negative.

Roku 3 review: our favorite media streamer, and the simplest to use, too

Roku's media streamers have carved out a notable niche for themselves, with what started out as a Netflix box, but quickly grew to include hundreds of other entertainment options. Whatever they've lacked in style, they've always made up for with an easy-to-navigate menu and remote, not to mention low prices. In fact, they've become our default recommendation in the media streamer category, and now the company is back with its third iteration.

Its approach hasn't changed: the Roku 3 is still a simple $99 box that brings internet content including video, some simple apps and even games to your TV. But this one is touted as the most powerful Roku ever, and the team behind it has even dared to tweak that boring, but simple menu system. There have always been some rough edges that needed polishing, along with holes in its offerings -- join us to see if it's good enough to be the best.

Turning tires into gas for energy and new, valuable materials

Apr. 4, 2013 ? Tire recycling represents an untapped opportunity, that may prove a success if processing costs do not become prohibitive

Europe's tire waste production is 3 million tonnes per year. Currently 65% to 70% of used tires end up in landfills. Not only are they causing environmental damage, but a loss of added value in the form of new products that recycling can generate. One of the approaches for recycling tires is now being investigated in a EU funded project called TyGRE. tires offer recycling potentials because they have a better heating value than biomass or coal, and they contain a high content of volatile gasses. They can therefore be an interesting source of synthetic fuels, also called synfuels, according to Sabrina Portofina, a researcher at the Italian national agency for new technologies, energy and sustainable economic development, ENEA, in Portici, near Naples. As part of the project, she is conducting an experiment to analyse a thermal process to recuperate synthesis gas, also called syngas, and solid materials from the tire scrap.

The research project consists of two components. First, it investigates the pyrolysis of the tire material to extract the volatile gasses that form the syngas. Second, it is looking into the use of the formed char to produce other materials, most importantly, silicon carbide, a material used in the manufacture of ceramic materials and in electronic applications. The first stage of the experimental process set up at ENEA consists of a heat treatment of the tire scrap. This process involves injecting the scrap, together with steam, in a reactor and in heating it up to almost 1,000 degrees Celsius. Although the heating requires energy, it will be recovered by the energy contained in the produced syngas; a mixture of mainly hydrogen, carbon monoxide and dioxide, and methane. This gas can be used as a fuel -- having a similar heating capacity to natural gas -- but also as a starter material for the production of other by-products.

Such by-products are what add the most value to the recycling process. They are viewed as a "must." Solid carbon is collected after the gasification as a basis for the productions of these by-products. "To increase the added value of the gasification we decided to include the production of products such as silicon carbide," says Portofino. The carbon would react with silicon oxide at high temperature to form the silicon carbide.

Recycling tires to create fuels only is not promising, but having silicon carbide as an added by-product is a good choice, according to Valerie Shulman, Secretary General of the European tire Recycling Association, ETRA. "Silicon carbide is one of the materials of the future, it is used in metallurgy, in ceramics, and in a variety other products. It is quite expensive to produce but you can get from 1,200 to 3,000 Euro a tonne," she says.

Some experts are sceptical regarding the cost effectiveness of this process, however. "I think the cost is too high, and you have to use a granulate that is expensive," comments Juan Antonio Tejela Otero, an engineer and sales manager at Renecal, a tire recycling company in Guardo, in the Palencia province of Spain.

A prototype plant is now under construction at the ENEA facilities in Trisaia in Southern Italy. It is expected to be in operation at the end of March. It will process about 30 kg of tire waste per hour. Operating the prototype will establish how sustainable the TyGRE recycling scheme will be. Portofino concludes: "We will then be able to do the energy balance of the whole process."

CHICAGO (AP) ? Acclaimed film critic Roger Ebert said he's been diagnosed with cancer again and that he will scale back his prolific writing of movie reviews while undergoing radiation treatment.

In a blog post, the 70-year-old said he'll take a "leave of presence."

"I am not going away," the ailing Pulitzer Prize winner wrote in a note posted late Tuesday. "My intent is to continue to write selected reviews but to leave the rest to a talented team of writers. ... What's more, I'll be able at last to do what I've always fantasized about doing: reviewing only the movies I want to review."

The veteran critic battled cancer in his thyroid and salivary glands and lost the ability to speak and eat during previous surgery, which also left him with a facial disfigurement.

Ebert said the cancer recurrence was discovered after a "painful fracture" that made it difficult for him to walk. He hospitalized late last year with a hip fracture.

"It really stinks that the cancer has returned and that I have spent too many days in the hospital," he wrote.

In addition to the select movie reviews he'll write, Ebert said he also plans to spend time writing about his own illness.

"I may write about what it's like to cope with health challenges and the limitations they can force upon you," he said. "So on bad days I may write about the vulnerability that accompanies illness. On good days, I may wax ecstatic about a movie so good it transports me beyond illness."

Ebert penned more than 300 reviews last year. He also said he plans to relaunch his website and roll out several other projects later this year.

Ebert began reviewing films for the Chicago Sun-Times in 1967 and marked his 46th anniversary at the paper on Wednesday. He was the nation's foremost movie critic on television on shows such as "Sneak Previews" and "At the Movies."

Reaction to Rice video has Rutgers reconsidering

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? Rutgers officials had already seen the video showing coach Mike Rice shoving, grabbing and throwing basketballs at players during practice and yelling gay slurs at them before it was aired by ESPN on Tuesday.

The school punished Rice in December, suspending him for three games and fining him $50,000.

Now that the video has gone viral, many ? including the governor of New Jersey ? are wondering why Rutgers let Rice keep his job at all.

Athletic director Tim Pernetti said Tuesday that the school was reconsidering its decision to retain the fiery 44-year-old coach.

The videotape, broadcast Tuesday on ESPN, prompted scores of outraged social media comments as well as sharp criticism from Gov. Chris Christie and Miami Heat star LeBron James. The head of the New Jersey Assembly called for Rice to be fired.

Pernetti was given a copy of the video in late November by a former employee. In addition to the suspension and fine, Pernetti ordered Rice to attend anger management classes.

In an interview with WFAN Radio in New York on Tuesday, Pernetti said university president Robert Barchi also viewed the tape last fall and agreed with the punishment.

Phone messages left for Rice by the AP were not immediately returned.

But ESPN's broadcast prompted an outcry.

"Governor Christie saw the video today for the first time and he is obviously deeply disturbed by the conduct displayed and strongly condemns this behavior," spokesman Michael Drewniak said. "It's not the type of leadership we should be showing our young people and clearly there are questions about this behavior that need to be answered by the leaders at Rutgers University."

James weighed in with a tweet: "If my son played for Rutgers or a coach like that he would have some real explaining to do and I'm still gone whoop on him afterwards! C'mon."

The video shows numerous clips of Rice at practice firing basketballs at players, hitting them in the back, legs, feet and shoulders. Rice was also shown pushing players in the chest and grabbing them by their jerseys and yanking them around the court. Rice could be heard screaming obscenities and gay slurs at players.

Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver (D-Essex/Passaic) called Rice's conduct "unacceptable not only at our state university, but in all circumstances. It is offensive and unbecoming of our state."

"Mike Rice should no longer be employed by Rutgers University," Oliver said. "He must go. Meanwhile, the decision not to dismiss him last year needs a complete and thorough review."

Rice, who was hired by Pernetti three years ago, is 44-51 at Rutgers, including 16-38 in the Big East, after going 73-31 in three seasons at Robert Morris. The Scarlet Knights went 15-16 this season and 5-13 in the Big East.

"You have to be always cautious about public reaction, because the reaction the public is having is the same I had when I saw it (the film)," Pernetti told the radio station. "I am factoring everything into what we do going forward. The most important thing I am factoring in is trying to make sure that we don't do harm to Rutgers University, because we are a small slice of the pie here at this great place. I don't want to put any negatively on the university when we have a lot of real good things going on."

Pernetti said he understands why many are asking why Rice wasn't fired after the initial investigation.

"I spent more time with that option on whether we should fire Mike or not than any other option," he said. "At the same the results of the investigation where we ended up, the determination was made to suspend him. My biggest concern as the AD is that I am always trying to protect the interests and reputation of the university and that's what makes this one so difficult. There is a lot of hindsight ... that there will be no other option than to terminate Mike. I made that decision. I am accountable for it. I have to live with it."

Rice was Pernetti's first major hire after getting the AD's job.

Assemblyman Reed Gusciora (D-Mercer/Hunterdon) called Rice's conduct indefensible, and said he should have been fired in December, after the tape was given to Pernetti.

Gusciora also said Pernetti's decision deserves a full review.

"If the university does not act, I will seek to add a provision to the state budget defunding Mr. Rice's salary," Gusciora said. "Taxpayers should not be paying for this behavior."

Pernetti said his decision to only suspend Rice was made in part because the coach was remorseful and admitted he made mistakes. Pernetti said Rice also worked hard to improve himself with the counseling.

Rice had a reputation as being "a fiery guy with an edge" before coming to Rutgers and Pernetti said the two talked about it for five hours before he was hired.

"He convinced me he understood his reputation, but he also understood where the line was," Pernetti said. "I made clear to him if he crossed the line he would be held accountable. In this case he did, and we held him accountable for it."

That might not be enough in the wake of the video made by Eric Murdock, the former NBA player who was hired by Rice to be director of player development.

The two had a falling out over Murdock's appearances at a camp, and Pernetti said Murdock's contract was not renewed. Murdock, who said he was fired, then compiled the video, splicing together the practice lowlights of Rice's first three years as coach.

Pernetti said about 60 percent of the incidents happened in Rice's first season. He also was upset with Rice using a certain gay slur at a university where student Tyler Clementi committed suicide after a roommate used a webcam to spy on him with another man.

"I would tell you that that word was at the core of the suspension," Pernetti said. "It absolutely concerns me. It's not acceptable."

There Is Such Thing As a Cockroach Cam and It's Just As Gross As You'd Imagine

If you're one of those people who feel as if you're undeserving of love and/or enjoy torturing yourself for fun, here's something new to add to your self-mutilation bag o' tricks: watch a 24/7/365 Cockroach Cam. It's like watching a bunch of cam girls go about their daily lives only the opposite of that because those cam girls would actually be disgusting cockroaches that hiss and scream and make your stomach churn. It's the worst thing on the Internet right now. I also can't stop watching. More »

Donnie Wahlberg: NKOTB is back and 'committed'

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

For anyone who grew up in the late 1980s and early 1990s, New Kids on the Block were almost impossible to avoid. The five-member onetime boy band (Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood, Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight and Joey McIntyre) sold over 80 million albums worldwide and sold out stadiums around the world when they toured.

Of course, they're all grown up now, with a new album ("10") and preparing to join fellow former teen heartthrob bands 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men on a tour that kicks off May 31. But before that, they dropped by the TODAY studio Wednesday -- all dressed alike in gray suits and skinny ties (looking very "Jersey Boys") -- to chat with Matt Lauer about rebooting the band after so many years of downtime.

"I think we've learned to balance personal lives and the stress of and demands of what we do," said Walhberg, who appears on the TV show "Blue Bloods" and is the brother of actor Mark Wahlberg.

"It's a lot of work ... we're not kids any more," he added. "We're older guys now and we've got to to balance family and work and other interests that we have, but we're all here, and we're committed."

Check out the video for more -- including a performance of their new song "Remix."

Finding instead of searching

Apr. 2, 2013 ? It is easy to lose track of things in large storage facilities but not at the wind turbine manufacturer Enercon's facility in Magdeburg though, where a positioning system with digital inventory management increases transparency and expedites processes.

Up to 50 meters long and weighing tons, the rotor blades for wind energy systems that Enercon produces in its facility in Magdeburg are truly impressive. They require the corresponding amount of space when they are stored temporarily at the plant premises of 0.5 square kilometers, waiting to be delivered. For a long time, the external storage facility was organized by telephone, information board and manual documentation. That was a source of potential errors. In addition, it cost a lot to keep the inventory records current, for example when employees moved a module around on the premises. Inventory had to be taken to maintain an overview of the warehouse.

The management of Enercon was long aware that this method required a lot of time and money. However, an alternative that avoided media failures was not in sight -- not until the plant planners from Enercon met with experts from the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation IFF in Magdeburg, Germany, to exchange ideas. "In earlier times, there were a lot of media failures between the bulletin board, paper printouts, Excel spreadsheets and other aids in stockkeeping," recalls Tobias Kutzler, project manager at IFF. The IFF project team suggested a solution for managing the outdoor storage facility that simplified the work processes and reduced inventory management expenditures considerably.

GPS module and motion sensors simplify taking inventory

The idea: during final acceptance, a locator the size of a small paperback book is attached to each module. Using satellite data, the GPS module contained in it calculates its position down to approximately one meter. This position is transmitted by radio signals to the control center, where the module is registered in a digital map. A motion sensor detects when the part is being moved and signals the new location of the rotor blade on the grounds. Only a few mouse clicks are required to retrieve the location of the module and its production and storage history. This saves time: If, previously, taking inventory required up to two days, the time required now drops to less than 5 minutes.

Two RFID chips (one in the locator and a second one directly on the module) complete the continuous monitoring. The digital nameplates serve as a type of logbook. They are scanned with a portable reader and contain information on, for instance, module number, module type and origin. This way, the parts can still be identified even on the wind turbine construction site or later during maintenance work or repairs.

An adapter attached to the rotor blade flange, i.e. its connection, is used to mount the locator. If a storage facility employee removes the locator before delivery he or she must merely set it down upside down for a certain amount of time. The part is then removed from the stock list, without entering it in the computer.

The employees can rely on the software even when planning their storage facility. The software suggests the ideal storage location for each rotor blade so that space is utilized as efficiently as possible. Employees may accept the suggestion -- or specify a suitable storage site themselves. The software recognizes that and computes the second most option. The era of countless documents and phone calls is over at Enercon in Magdeburg. "Today, there is a large touchscreen and distributed workstations on which any information can be retrieved," according to project manager Kutzler.

More than just modules can be tracked down in storage facilities with the locators. A steel manufacturer has equipped its vehicles with them to measure the stress on them when they are moving heavy steel parts. The IFF has even equipped electric cars with the modules for the Harz.EE-Mobility research project on electric vehicle networks to document the vehicles' use. Among other things the researchers identified the charge levels of the batteries with which the vehicles are driven and parked. This helps optimize the charging station infrastructure and assess the use of electrical vehicles as energy buffers in smart grids.

Study looks at importance of coping skills during hospital stays

Apr. 3, 2013 ? No mother wants to see her child hospitalized, but how she copes with it could impact the child's anxiety level, a recent study by a University of Alabama researcher found.

As hospitals move toward family-centered care, there is a greater need to evaluate the response of the whole family, not just the patient.

By exploring the relationships between hospitalized children's anxiety level, mothers' use of coping strategies and mothers' satisfaction with the hospital experience, Dr. Sherwood Burns-Nader, a child life specialist and assistant professor in UA's College of Human Environmental Sciences' department of human development and family studies, hoped to learn more about how the health-care team can promote coping strategies in patients and families.

"Coping patterns are important because they facilitate a person's handling of a stressful experience," Burns-Nader said. "If someone is going through a tough time, positive coping patterns provide extra resources that can help that person deal with the demand of a stressor."

The study, "The relationship between mothers' coping patterns and children's anxiety about their hospitalization as reflected in drawings," which was co-authored by Burns-Nader; Dr. Maria Hernandez-Reif, UA professor and director of UA's Pediatric Development Research Lab; and CHES alumna Maggie Porter, was accepted for publication in the Journal of Child Health Care.

Burns-Nader looked at 48 mothers and children (24 mother-child pairs) who were admitted to the pediatric unit at DCH Regional Medical Center for a short period of stay. The children ranged in age from 5 to 11, with 54 percent being black and 46 percent white. The families predominantly represented the lower middle to middle socioeconomic status.

Through the use of questionnaires that looked at the mother's coping behaviors and her satisfaction with the hospital and drawings by her hospitalized child, Burns-Nader discovered the more coping strategies a mother used, the less anxiety her child felt. In addition, when mothers used coping strategies, the more satisfied they were with the hospital experience.

There are many coping strategies, both positive and negative, including exercising, seeking religious support, focusing on the positive, distancing one's self, acting out, eating, drinking and more.

In this study, coping patterns were grouped into three categories: family integration (relying on family members to assist in the care of nonhospitalized children); knowledge of the hospital experience (gathering information about the child's diagnosis); and maintaining social support (going for a walk with a friend).

"Positive coping patterns increase hope and help one feel his stress could be manageable with support found in the coping patterns," Burns-Nader said.

In determining the child's anxiety, Burns-Nader used children's drawings, a technique that has long been established in clinical practice as a way to measure emotional status.

"Sometimes you cannot see how a child is thinking through their behaviors," Burns-Nader said. "However, a drawing allows you to see their ideas, fears and concerns. It is just an insight into the child's thoughts and anxieties."

With this study, each child was given a sheet of white paper and a box of eight basic crayons and asked to draw a person in the hospital. Burns-Nader then looked at a variety of features in the drawing -- facial expression, size of the person compared to his environment, presence of hospital equipment, use of colors, position of the person on the bed, omission or exaggeration of body parts -- to determine the child's anxiety level.

While this particular study looked at a small sampling of families with short hospital stays, Burns-Nader hopes to expand her research in the future by looking at how daily encounters such as out-of-pocket expenses and unexpected visitors impact the stress of parents, as well as exploring the anxiety level in children who have longer hospital stays.

Research on these relationships could provide information to health-care teams that may affect children's care and recovery. Hospitals can help families cope with a child's hospitalization by providing resources to the family and child such as giving information to the family, offering a family break room, supporting the hospitalized child during periods of family absence and maintaining a parent reference library.

Study findings also imply the need for interventions to familiarize children with medical procedures and equipment to decrease anxiety and to provide activities that allow children to express the sources of anxiety in an acceptable manner, Burns-Nader said. Medical teams could provide information through playroom and bedside activities or through pre-admission tours, she added.

"The medical field is utilizing family-centered care. This means we are caring for more than the illness," she said. "The relevance of this study is that it helps us, as medical team members, see how we can care for the psychosocial needs of our patients and families. This is important because a positive psychosocial response is related to recovery and healing from illnesses."

Elissa Murphy, One of Yahoo's High-Profile Tech Execs ... - AllThingsD

4ea5d03360d57_large

One of Yahoo?s top women execs, Elissa Murphy, who is VP of engineering for cloud services, is departing the Silicon Valley Internet giant to become CTO and head of platform efforts at Go Daddy, said sources.

It?s the second talent raid on Yahoo by the company?s former product head Blake Irving, who is now CEO at one of the world?s biggest Web hosting and domain registration companies. A few weeks ago, he grabbed James Carroll, who was SVP of the consumer and global platform group at Yahoo and who is now running international efforts at Go Daddy.

Murphy is perhaps the highest-profile woman within the tech ranks at Yahoo ? besides its CEO Marissa Mayer ? and is very well regarded within the company and outside it, too, for her computing expertise. She has overseen a great deal of code contributions to Hadoop, a technology essential to large-scale computing, first developed at Yahoo.

She is leaving the employ of platform head Jay Rossiter, for whom Carroll also worked.

Both Murphy and Carroll had first been hired into Yahoo by Irving.

(Update: Go Daddy confirmed the move, saying she will start May 6 as CTO and EVP of platforms there. ?Elissa Murphy is more than just a top ?woman? in technology, she?s a top ?person? at the top of her field,? said Irving in a statement. ?Elissa just plain rocks.?)

She seems to, as currently featured on a Yahoo careers page that touts ?stories from our most valuable assets.?

Read the deservedly effusive text about her: ?Yahoo!?s ability to retain a fun, startup-like feel is what attracted Elissa Murphy to Yahoo!. The VP of Engineering for Cloud Services says that this unique combination makes for a creative, yet fast-paced environment that is unlike anything else in the industry. ?You want to build cloud systems but you want to do it quickly? This is the place you want to come to.??

I have emails into all for comment.

But here?s Murphy?s classy memo to the troops on her departure, in which she praises Mayer, so we don?t need Yahoo PR to return our email for comment:

TITLE: So long!

Hi all,

I?m writing you today to share that I?ve just resigned my position as head of Cloud Services and Hadoop at Yahoo! to pursue a new venture. The time I?ve spent working and learning with you has been wonderful, and it?s not easy to say goodbye. I have, however, been presented with a truly unique opportunity to expand my scope of impact at a company with indomitable spirit, brimming with passion and hell-bent on changing the world.

From my first experience programming a PET computer in 4th grade and throughout my career, I?ve been captivated by the potential for technology to transform people?s lives. In my time with Yahoo!, it?s been adrenalizing to push the limits on one of the world?s largest-scale cloud infrastructures ? opening the door for new advances in machine learning and predictive analytics. When I look back on the achievements I?m most proud of during my time here they all center on people and innovation. I am proud to have played a role in making Yahoo! a leading voice in Hadoop by launching the next generation of Hadoop at scale. I am proud that in less than a year alone we?ve been able to accomplish more with Hadoop, Storm, OpenStack and our NoSQL stores than many thought possible. I am proud that we continue to fight for open source and open ecosystems, even as those around us profit from further locking them down. And I am proud to have helped lead the effort to pull ourselves up from our bootstraps, to get back up, and to remind the world that Yahoo! still has a place in their hearts and homes.

But most of all, I am proud to have worked with so many smart and talented people. I feel honored to call so many of you friends, and I thank you all for the opportunity to work alongside you. If you want to connect, you can find me at here.

I want to give a special thanks to Marissa, who has brought a thoughtfulness and determination to Yahoo! that promises new hope for our culture. Marissa, I can?t tell you how much I have appreciated your sponsorship and counsel, and for your support as I move forward. I believe Yahoo?s brightest days are still ahead with you at the helm, and I?ll be watching and cheering for your success in the years to come.

So long everyone ? I hope our paths cross in a future more near than distant!

Best,

elissa
